ELMHURST – One down.
The York softball team won its playoff opener Tuesday in dominant fashion, 12-0 over Lincoln Park at Bryan Middle School. The Dukes plated 10 runs in the first and cruised to a five-inning victory.
“The girls were really amped up to play,” said York coach Drew McGuire. “They had a really good attitude when we got to the field.”
Abby Solem had three hits and three runs scored to pace the offense. Solem, just a freshman, has fit right in the middle of York's lineup. The third baseman hit third in Tuesday's game and is the team leader in RBIs with 33.
"She's been an awesome addition to this team, especially as a freshman being able to step up and play," said coach Drew McGuire. "She's been playing a stellar third base for us this year. It's just something that she's going to keep improving on and it's awesome to see."
Sarah Milkowski was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Isabella Jaeger blasted a three-run home run as part of the first-inning outburst.
Brooke Bandy got the win in the circle to help York advance to the Class 4A regional final scheduled for Saturday.
"We've played tough against a lot of really good teams and I think we're going to have a nice long run in the playoffs," McGuire said. "I'm pretty excited about it."
York, which is 19-14, is looking for its second regional title in a row and third in four seasons. The No. 2 seed Dukes will play the winner No. 7 Whitney Young in the regional final for the right to advance to the Resurrection sectional.
“As long as the girls show up ready to play with the same attitude they had on Tuesday I don’t think we’ll have any problems,” McGuire said.
