Lockdown at Morton West caused by expelled student

BERWYN – Berwyn police petitioned a 16-year-old expelled Morton West student to Cook County Juvenile Court for criminal trespass to state property following the lockdown at Morton West High School at 11:30 a.m. May 22.

The lockdown was put in effect after school officials learned a possible intruder had entered the school after 8 a.m.

Berwyn police, along with Sheriff's police and police from surrounding communities conducted a comprehensive search of the school but the offender was not found.

Police later identified the offender by reviewing school surveillance tapes. No threats were made to students or staff, and no weapon was involved or implied according to police.

The lockdown was initiated according to school emergency and crisis response plan prototcols immediately after the intruder was reported.

The lockdown was lifted at 1:20 p.m. after police completed a search of the school.

According to police, reports that the person who entered the school was armed and was later arrested in Cicero were inaccurate.
