LOMBARD – Three employees of the Article 2 Gun Range were treated for minor smoke inhalation and taken to a local hospital after a small fire broke out at the business on Wednesday night.

A fire was reported at 6:12 p.m. Wednesday at the business, 250 Cortland Ave.

When firefighters arrived, they found a smoldering fire in the soundproofing foam insulation in one of the business' shooting ranges, said Assistant Lombard Fire Chief Jerry Howell.

Due to the size and type of the business, the alarm was upgraded to a special alarm, which brought representatives from other fire departments to the scene and to assist at the village's fire stations.

Howell said firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames, but it took longer for them to pull down the remaining insulation and extinguish any hot spots. The design of the range where the fire began made it an additional challenge for fire crews to remove all of the smoke and in the end, they used to building's ventilation system to clear the building.

Representatives from the Lombard Building Department were called to the scene to assist with inspecting the building and fire investigators were at the business Thursday morning to continue investigating.

Damage is estimated at between $20,000 and $30,000 and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Lombard Fire Department was assisted at the scene by crews from Addison, Villa Park, York Center, Lisle-Woodridge, Carol Stream and Elmhurst. Stations were covered by crews from the Downers Grove Fire Department and Lisle-Woodridge and Glenside fire protection districts.
