WESTERN SPRINGS – Lyons Township had one foot in the regional final and then it all came crashing down.
The Lions were one out away from beating Hinsdale South in the Class 4A Lyons Township regional semifinal on Thursday, but a two-out double by Lauren Cairo drove in two runs to tie the game in the seventh inning. The Hornets went on to win 5-3 in nine innings.
“I’m sorry we didn’t get it done for the seniors, but as far as the juniors, sophomores and freshman they gotta take something from this game,” said LT coach Dawn Schabacker. “I told them ‘I’m going to remind you of this game and say remember when you just let it slip away? You were right there, one out away from getting into tomorrow’s game so you gotta take a little bit from there.’”
The No. 9 seed Hornets took the lead on a Holli Jones RBI single in the second inning.
LT, the No. 7 seed, answered with two in the third on a two-RBI double from Ashley Koziol. Koziol, who was also LT’s pitcher, had another RBI in the fifth inning.
The score remained 3-1 in the seventh. Sarah Hanson and Sydney Kopp both reached to start the top of the inning. Koziol retired the next two hitters, but Cairo’s first-pitch double tied the game.
Cairo drove in the Hornets’ first run in the ninth inning on an infield single. South added an insurance run and held on to advance to Friday’s regional final against No. 2 Mother McAuley.
