Terrace View Pond improvements proposed in Lombard

LOMBARD – An improvement project is planned for Terrace View Pond in the hopes that flood relief can be brought to the surrounding neighborhoods.

Although village engineers expect these improvements to reduce the frequency of flooding in the area of Crystal Avenue, the pond's watershed, they will offer little relief in the event of a storm similar to the one that hit the village on April 18.

Crystal Avenue, which borders the pond to the north, is one of the most flood-prone areas near the pond, and during a storm the water flows to this three-block stretch of land. Currently, there is a storm sewer on the street that carries rain water to the village's pumping station at Route 53, and a second storm sewer that brings water directly into the pond when the first backs up.

Lombard Public Works officials said the main objectives of improvements at Terrace View Pond will be to reduce flooding along Crystal Avenue, but in the most economic way possible.

The solution that has been proposed is one that lowers the level of the pond by one foot and installs two additional storm sewers to drain water from Crystal Avenue to the pond during rain events.

Draining the pond will happen during a period of dry weather and a pumping station will be built near the pond to regulate the water level. Reducing the level of the pond is expected to allow more than 4 million gallons of rain water to drain into the pond.

The two relief storm sewers will provide additional drainage for Crystal Avenue.

Additionally, during the next five years, the village will spend about $5 million to build a new pumping station to replace its old one at Route 53. A dollar amount was not available for the proposed Terrace View Pond improvements.
