PETA honors Lombard firefighters for duckling rescue

LOMBARD – Members of the Lombard Fire Department are being honored by PETA after recently rescuing a family of ducklings from a local storm drain.

A Lombard resident contacted PETA after she noticed ducklings trapped in a storm drain last week, PETA officials said. She had been able to rescue two members of the flock on May 17, but she couldn’t reach the two remaining ducklings.

PETA contacted the Lombard Fire Department, and on Sunday, fire crews responded to the storm drain the free them.

The ducklings were taken to a local wildlife rehabilitation center and are doing well, according to a statement from PETA.

To recognize the firefighters’ efforts, PETA will give the department a Compassionate Fire Department Award, along with a letter of appreciation and a box of vegan chocolates.

PETA encourages anyone who notices animals who are hurt or in danger to contact local emergency officials.
