Downers Grove South volleyball rallies past Glenbard West for regional title
Nick Timreck's all-around effort guides Mustangs to first regional title since 2011
DOWNERS GROVE - Nick Timreck just did what he's done all season long.
When Downers Grove South's boys volleyball team needed a big point or a defensive stop, the senior was there as he helped the Mustangs top Glenbard West 23-25, 25-20, 25-13 in a regional championship match Wednesday at South.
After the Hilltoppers won the first game and threatened to pull away in the second game, Timreck served three points to turn a 7-6 deficit into a 9-6 lead. When West seemed to seize a little momentum with a sideout that made it 14-11 later in the game, he had back-to-back kills to pad the lead. And in the third game he had a kill and two block-kills as the Mustangs' 9-7 lead swelled to 16-7 during David DeMarco's service run.
"Nick has been that way all year long," South head coach Kurt Steuer said. "He's someone we rely on and the guys put a lot of faith in him that he'll be able to put the ball down almost every time he touches. He's a leader on the court and someone we love to have."
There was no doubting Timreck's influence on Wednesday's match. He tallied nine kills to share team-high honors with Mike Schmitt, and Timreck added eight block-kills, three digs and three aces to help make a long-time dream come true.
"It's the way I've always imagined it since I started playing freshman year," said Timreck, a two-year varsity player. "I always wanted to win a regional championship on our home floor, and we did it."
South (25-11) ran a multi-faceted offense all match long, one that saw Will Tischler and John Hanek floor eight kills apiece and Austin Adank four kills. Jordan Pawlicki finished with 35 assists and DeMarco led the defense with 25 digs.
The Mustangs will play Naperville North in a semifinal of the Proviso West sectional at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Neuqua Valley or Waubonsie Valley would be the potential opponent in the sectional championship May 28.
