WEST CHICAGO – Local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops have been busy volunteering their time in West Chicago, earning recognition for their efforts in a news release on the city's website.

For the past two years, Boy Scout Troop 33 has planted various flowers and ornamental grasses to beautify the downtown area while members of Girl Scout Troop 50386 are using their artistic talents to create colorful posters for an upcoming event.

The troops' efforts in the community extend to their leaders as well.

Troop leaders Steve Usedom, Duane Gill and Rita Butler are active members of the planning committee for the city's annual downtown garden festival, Blooming Fest, which took place on Saturday. Boy Scouts also served a pancake breakfast for festival visitors at the American Legion, 123 Main St.

"It's wonderful to see the enthusiasm and energy of our young people and the role models leading them, taking ownership in their community and contributing to the overall quality of life for all of us," West Chicago Mayor Ruben Pineda said.
