Red Devils break even in 5 games leading up to playoffs
Two win, two losses, one tie to close regular season ahead of May 24 playoff opener
HINSDALE – Hinsdale Central’s baseball team experienced a little bit of everything in the final week of the regular season.
The Red Devils topped Downers Grove North and Proviso East, fell to Hinsdale South and Lyons Township and tied Naperville North before they were scheduled to start the postseason at 4 p.m. today at home against Wabuonsie Valley.
In a final prep for the postseason, Central (16-13-1) fell to LT 8-3 in a nonconference matchup Monday. The host Lions staked themselves to an 8-0 lead, including a five-run fourth inning, before the Red Devils plated three in the top of the sixth. Max Peters and Jared Eck walked to start the frame before Chris Botsoe laced a one-out triple to score them both. Botsoe scored on Matt Muellner’s ground out to first base. Central managed just three hits (Justice Camalick and Tyler Ward singled in the fifth) and was undone by five errors.
Against Naperville North on May 17, Jacob White stole home in the bottom of the seventh inning to knot the score at 3-3 and salvage a tie after the Red Devils yielded the go-ahead run in the top of the frame. Central scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first. Eck singled to start the frame and later scored on Muellner’s single. White doubled after Eck reached and scored on Adam Dressler’s single.
Two hits were the only blemish against starting pitcher Tommy Concklin in Central’s 10-0, five-inning win over Proviso East on May 16. He struck out four and didn’t yield a walk and got plenty of run support as the Red Devils scored four times in the second and five times in the third. Connor Neumann had a three-run double in the third in support of Concklin while Justice Camalick plated two with a sacrifice fly in the second and a single in the third.
