Sentinels test defending champs en route to boys state meet

Tim Doll runs to two sectional titles as Westmont takes large contingent to state

LISLE – Westmont’s boys track and field team crowned five champions and earned seven state berths at Friday’s Class 1A Lisle sectional meet at Benedictine University.

In doing that, the Sentinels gave defending state champ Leo something to think about at this weekend’s state meet.

“We gave reigning state champion Leo High School a run for their money,” Westmont coach Rainy Kaplan said. “It was a close battle the entire meet.”

Leo and the Sentinels could duke it out again at the state meet, which begins with Thursday’s preliminaries and continues with Saturday’s finals at Eastern Illinois University.

Tim Doll won two event titles at sectionals in the 200-meter dash (22.72 seconds) and 400 dash (50.31), and he was second in the 100 dash with a time of 11.41.

Kris Pierce was also a dual champ. He won the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 10 inches, then led off the 4x800 relay that edged Lisle with a winning time of 8:33.75. Danny LoGiurato, Mitch Perrotta and Nick Strobl were also on the 4x800 squad.

Michael Robertson captured the pole vault title with a height of 10-6.

Pierce earned a third state berth in the triple jump, where he finished second with a mark of 41-3.

Nate Novota (4:44.82) and Anthony Alessi (4:46.17) just missed making it to state with third- and fourth-place finishes, respectively, in the 1,600 run. Robertson was close to earning another state berth in the 300 hurdles (third, 42.67).

David McDermott also just missed a trip to state in both the shot put (third, 40-4) and discus (fourth, 115-10).
