Prep roundup: Montini baseball caps regular season with 20th win
The Broncos won their 20th game of the season 8-7 over Harlem on Monday at Northern Illinois University. Austin Kline had two hits and two RBIs to lead the offense. Tyler Quick earned the save to help Montini finish the regular season 20-7.
The Warriors lost to Oswego East 5-2 in a regional semifinal on Wednesday at Downers Grove North.
Home court advantage wasn’t enough for the Rams in the regional semifinal against Metea Valley. The No. 7-seed Rams lost to the No. 10 Mustangs 25-21, 25-14 on Tuesday in Lombard. Joey Farrell had seven kills in his final match for the Rams. Fellow senior Zach Greene had four kills and three blocks in his return from injury. East finished with a 24-12 record.
After defeating IMSA 25-12, 25-14 in a regional quarterfinal Monday, the Warriors fell to No. 4-seed Glenbard West 25-19, 25-15 on Tuesday. Willowbrook, the No. 13 seed in the sectional, finished the season 26-11.
The Blazers failed to get out of the regional semifinal despite winning Game 1 by a wide margin at Geneva. AT lost the close match 25-13, 24-26, 28-30.
The Broncos fell to Metea Valley 25-10, 25-8 in a regional quarterfinal at Glenbard East on Monday.
The Broncos beat Batavia 10-2 in the first round of the Lacrosse Cup on Monday, but fell to Deerfield 13-2 in the round of 32 on Wednesday.
The Lady Broncos routed Wheaton 21-5 in a sectional final at Lyons Township on Monday and kept going in the next round. Montini dominated Neuqua Valley 23-5 in a supersectional on Wednesday to advance to a state semifinal for the first time in the program’s history.
Matt Burns qualified for the Class 3A state meet in two events. The junior was second in the 400-meter dash (49.19 seconds) and third in the 200 (22.24) at the Glenbard North sectional to advance in both events.
Juan Valdez was AT’s lone state qualifier from the Class 3A Glenbard North sectional on Friday. Valdez was sixth in the 800-meter run, but ran a state-qualifying time of 1:56.87.
The 4x800-meter relay team of Brittany Fisher, Maddy Jamrozek, Catherine Kitz and Theresa Connelly took second at the Class 2A state meet. The Montini relay came in at 9:30.62, more than three seconds behind the winning relay from Lakes. Freshman Gianna Salzbrunn was 15th in the 300-meter hurdles.
Junior Molly Krawczykowski earned the Warriors a team point at the Class 3A state meet by placing ninth in the 800-meter run. Older sister Colleen was 21st in the long jump and 24th in the 300-meter hurdles. Taylor Burton was 18th in the 400.
