First-place relay leads 13 York entries to state
Defending state champ Lake Park edges Dukes for sectional team title
CAROL STREAM – Earlier in the season, York topped Lake Park at an invite, but the three-time defending state champion Lancers got the best of the Dukes on May 17 at the Class 3A Glenbard North sectional.
Lake Park won the sectional with 147 points and Wheaton North edged York for second. The Falcons had 105 points to the Dukes’ 103.
York qualified 13 entries to the state meet in Charleston with one sectional title, the 4x800-meter relay. Alex Bashqawi, Matt Plowman, Jack Achen and Alex Baughman came in at 7:56.4 for the win.
Plowman and Bashqawi also qualified individually in the 800. Plowman was fourth and Bashqawi was fifth, but both ran state-qualifying standard times in a race that included six state qualifiers.
The 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays also qualified via second-place finishes at the sectional.
Two of the Dukes’ best chances at event finalists are Scott Milling and Jarvis Grace-Hill. Milling enters state with the eighth-fastest qualifying time in the 3,200 (9:17.43). Grace-Hill had the 12th fasted 300-meter hurdles time (39.52 seconds) in Class 3A.
In no surprise, York will add more distance runners to the state field in the form of two 1,600 runners, Nate Mroz and Chris May. Mroz (4:26.60) was third and May was right behind (4:20.60) in fourth.
Three field events will also join the runners at state. Seniors Curt Thieme and Shawn John both cleared 13 feet, 9 inches. John will be making his third appearance at state while Thieme is a first-time qualifier. Junior Reid Smith also qualified in the high jump.
