DOWNERS GROVE - On the strength of event wins by Odell McFarland and Jalen Lewis, Downers Grove South’s boys track team piled up 59 points and finished third Friday at the Class 3A Downers Grove North sectional.

The Mustangs qualified for the state meet in five events with McFarland and Lewis earning two state berths each. Jacob Amiri will join them when the state meet begins with preliminary races Friday at Eastern Illinois University.

Lewis captured both hurdles titles, winning the 110-meter race in 14.92 seconds and taking the 300 race in 39.50.

McFarland won the 200 dash in 21.71 after taking second in the 100 dash with a time of 10.91.

Jacob Amiri was the third state qualifier for South. His time of 1:55.81 in the 800 run was comfortably under the state-qualifying standard and was good for second in the sectional.

Amiri was joined by Ross Netzel, Charlie Ambrose and Jon Osei on the 4x400 relay, which just missed a state trip with a third-place time of 3:26.82. Luke Lathrop (fifth, 49 feet, 5.75 inches) and Scott Mitchell (sixth, 49-3.50) came close to state berths in the shot put.
