DOWNERS GROVE - It was the same hop, skip and jump, but Parrker Westphal just did it better.

Coming into Friday’s Class 3A Downers Grove North sectional meet, the Bolingbrook junior had gone 43 feet, 5.5 inches in the triple jump during the season. He added nearly a foot to that mark and won the sectional title by posting a 44-2.5.

Westphal and four of his teammates will now head to the state meet, which begins with Friday’s preliminary races and flights and continues with Saturday’s finals at Eastern Illinois University.

On the track, sophomore Peyton Chapman went neck-and-neck with Richards’ Deion Carter in the 400-meter dash and finished second with a time of 50.69 seconds. Carter clocked a 50.67.

Chapman was also part of the state-qualifying 4x800 relay team. Chapman, Kokeith Perry, Jerome Davis and Johnathon Cook finished third in the race with a time of 7:58.32.

The Raiders had several near-misses in terms of state qualifying. Demari Portis made it to the finals of the 100 and 200 dashes and combined was only 1.59 seconds away from making state.

Bernard Eshun and Jalen Young were both less than a second off the mark in the 110 hurdles, and Perry (800 run), Young (300 hurdles), Ben Junkroski (pole vault) and the 4x100 and 4x200 relays all had top-five finishes.
