RIVERSIDE – The Riverside Brookfield softball team completed the regular season with a 10-20 record.

The Bulldogs picked up win No. 10 on May 14 against Ridgewood. RB won 13-0 in five innings on senior day. Sophomore Katie O’Connell picked up the win with a two-hit shutout. Seniors Emma Schander and Emily Hastings had four hits each in a 16-hit explosion.

The win brought RB’s final Metro Suburban Conference record to 7-5.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs faced a split doubleheader with travel in between and lost both games. RB fell to West Suburban Silver-champ Downers Grove North 11-4 at home. Hastings hit a two-run home run to bring RB within 5-4 in the fifth inning, but the Trojans added some insurance runs and the Bulldogs couldn’t respond.

The second game on Saturday was at the Stone City Jamboree in Minooka. RB lost to Elgin 7-2. The Bulldogs led 2-0 early but couldn’t hold the lead.

The regular season was a struggle with RB carrying a younger roster than in recent seasons. Wednesday’s playoff opener, a regional semifinal against Hyde Park, will offer RB a chance to reset the season and strive for postseason glory.

Hastings finished the regular season with a staggering .621 batting average and nine home runs. Schander also had a big year at the plate, hitting .473. RB hit .355 as a team.
