WESTERN SPRINGS – The conference season may be over, but Lyons Township still played a busy schedule last week to stay in rhythm for the playoffs.
The Lions picked up wins over Lincoln-Way East, Morton and Hinsdale Central while losing to Normal West. LT finished the regular season 23-10.
LT coach George Ushela tries to play a tough nonconference schedule and use different pitchers along the way. This final week helped to set up the playoff rotation.
“We’re gearing up for the tournament,” Ushela said.
Junior Sam Cybulski made his first pitching appearance of the season and got the start against Lincoln-Way East on May 15. He pitched three innings in an 11-1 LT win in six innings. Typical starters Keith Lehmann and Tom Prescott came on in relief.
The Lions trailed 1-0 after three, but the offense exploded late. LT scored eight in the sixth inning.
Another rarely used pitcher, Max Larsen, started in Thursday’s 6-5 win over Morton. Lehmann starred at the plate going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Lehmann pitched a complete game in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Normal West. Each team managed just five hits and Lehmann struck out nine.
Ushela was coy on what his playoff rotation might look like, but one thing was clear.
“All I know is Keith is our No. 1,” Ushela said.
Lehmann’s Saturday start means he is lined up to next pitch in a regional final. LT opens the playoffs today at Argo and the regional final is 11 a.m. Saturday.
