Wheaton city manager names Deputy Schultz as new fire chief

WHEATON – Wheaton City Manager Donald Rose has appointed current Deputy Fire Chief William R. Schultz to head the city's fire department, according to a press release from the City of Wheaton Friday morning.

The fire chief position was vacant for more than a month after current veteran Chief Greg Berk announced his retirement on May 16. Berk, whose firefighting career has spanned 46 years and who has been the head of the Wheaton department since 2003, said that his last day in the position would be May 31. Schultz is set to take over effective June 3.

Schultz has served as deputy fire chief since 2006, serving as battalion chief of Wheaton in 2003. Before that he spent 12 years at the Village of Hazel Crest.
