West Chicago provides disaster relief information to residents
WEST CHICAGO – Now that DuPage County has been declared a disaster area due to flood damage from the storms on April 17 and 18, West Chicago residents may apply for assistance by visiting www.disasterassistance.gov or calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), according to a city news release.
The toll-free telephone number will operate from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week.
Residents also may apply for assistance in-person at a FEMA Disaster Recovery Center located at the Lisle Police Department, 5040 Lincoln Ave. The center will be open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily until further notice.
The assistance offered at the recovery center is the same as what is available by applying via telephone or online.
Even though the Lisle Police Department is housing the Disaster Recovery Center, all questions related to federal disaster assistance or the center should be directed to FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).
A FEMA inspector will most likely contact those who apply for federal assistance within a few days of their application to arrange a visit to their damaged residence. Residents are advised to ask to see identification before allowing an inspector to enter their home, as a FEMA inspector will always have an official badge.
Applicants who qualify for FEMA assistance will receive a federal government check, or the funds will be deposited directly into the bank account they designated in their application. A letter also will be sent to eligible recipients, explaining appropriate uses for the funds.
