Second community meeting planned for 47th/East intersection study

LA GRANGE – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) will hold a second community meeting May 29 regarding its study of the intersection at 47th Street and East Avenue.

The meeting will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the La Grange Park District, 536 East Avenue. IDOT formed the Community Advisory Group (CAG) in March to evaluate options for the intersection, currently a four-way stop.

One option being explored is an overpass. At an April Village Board meeting, former Village President Liz Asperger said IDOT got the message “loud and clear” from residents that they do not favor an overpass, which many think would increase traffic and affect bordering Sedgwick Park. Village trustees also said they oppose an overpass.

IDOT is also considering implementing a traffic light at the intersection. Takeaway from the first public meeting with IDOT officials was that residents favor the traffic signal, Asperger said in April.

IDOT plans to recommend a design approval for the project in June 2015.
