Gov. Quinn declares Backyard BBQ Cook-Off an official Illinois State Competition
GLEN ELLYN – Gov. Pat Quinn has declared the Glen Ellyn Backyard BBQ Cook-Off an official Illinois State Competition, allowing winners the opportunity to qualify for national barbecue contests.
This year’s event on Sept. 14 marks the fifth year of the cook-off, which was originally organized as a small block party among Glen Ellyn neighbors. It has since grown into a signature event for the village.
Every cook-off has benefitted Bridge Communities in Glen Ellyn, a grassroots transitional housing program for homeless families in DuPage County.
“We couldn’t be more excited about the governor’s proclamation," Bridge Communities' Resource Development Director Amy Van Polen said in a news release. "This will bring well-deserved attention to the hard work of this innovative band of BBQ enthusiasts who love their craft and love their community.”
In addition to the barbecue competition, the cook-off also features performances by various blues bands and a bags tournament for all ages.
