Prep roundup: Fairbairn sets shutout record for Glenbard East soccer

Glenbard East
The Rams moved on to Saturday's regional final with a 2-0 win over Downers Grove North. Freshman Brittany Paganucci earned a penalty kick and converted it in the first half to give the Rams the lead. Alex Ruffer also scored for East, which improved to 11-5-4 on the season. Senior goalkeeper Veronica Fairbairn recorded the shutout to pick up her 28th career shutout, setting a new school record.

East, the No. 7 seed in the sectional, will play host and No. 2 seed Lyons Township at 3 p.m. Saturday in Western Springs.

Montini The Broncos' season came to an end with a 1-0 loss at the hands of Queen of Peace on Wednesday in a Class 1A sectional semifinal at Benedictine University. Montini had upset top regional seed Lisle 1-0 to win a second consecutive regional title May 10.

Willowbrook The Warriors lost to Downers Grove South 10-1 in a regional semifinal Wednesday at South.

Addison Trail The Blazers' season came to an end with a 7-0 loss at the hands of host Lyons Township in a regional semifinal on Tuesday.

The Broncos clinched the Suburban Christian Conference Blue title with an 8-1 win over IC Catholic on May 10. Eric Frontzak struck out nine in a complete game effort. Montini also beat Geneva 17-8 on Tuesday. Austin Kline went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and six RBIs.

Willowbrook The Warriors swept Leyden in the final West Suburban Gold series of the season to move into third and finish 11-7 in the Gold. Willowbrook won by scores of 3-0, 8-1 and 7-3. Dave Cericola pitched a complete game shutout in Game 1 and struck out 11 Eagles. Jake Cady also went the distance in Game 2 and gave up just one run. Brian Johnson highlighted the finale with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.

Addison Trail The Blazers took two of three from Morton to finish 7-11 and fifth in the West Suburban Gold. AT lost the opener 7-5 but won the final two games with strong pitching. Rocco Costabile didn't allow any earned runs in a complete game 7-2 win in Game 2. Costabile was also 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI at the plate. Anthony Infantino pitched a shutout in a 5-0 win in the finale on Monday.

Glenbard East
After sweeping Addison Trail in a doubleheader on Saturday, the Rams lost to Wheaton Warrenville South 8-6 on Monday. Brittany Plimmer and winning pitcher Kara Tadda had two hits each, the only four East hits of the game, in a 4-2 win over AT in Game 1. Plimmer was 4-for-4 and Kelli Tyler blasted a three-run home run in a 7-6 win in Game 2.

Montini After beating Ridgewood (11-1), Whitney Young (9-3) and Joliet Catholic (14-3) the Broncos lost to Nazareth 3-2 on Tuesday. Alyssa Sclafani continued her standout season with home runs against Ridgewood and Whitney Young.

Willowbrook The Warriors split a doubleheader at Downers Grove South on Wednesday and finished 9-3 in the West Suburban Gold. The Warriors lost Game 1 9-1, but earned the split with a 6-4 victory in Game 2. Willowbrook finished second in the Gold and handed the Mustangs their only Gold defeat.

Addison Trail The Blazers snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-0 win over Hinsdale South on Wednesday. Bri Murray pitched a two-hit shutout. AT finished 4-8 in the West Suburban Gold to take fifth in the league.

Matt Burns and Jake Bloemke went one-two in the 400-meter dash at the West Suburban Gold meet at Hinsdale South on Friday. Burns also came in second in the 200. Bloemke, Zach Brunig, Burns and Dylan Jones teamed up to grab second in the 4x100-meter relay. Hayden Adams, Bloemke, Randall Dziak and Zac Heuer were also in the 4x200 relay. Dziak was second in the 110-meter hurdles. Zach Brunig was just behind in third. Dziak also took third in the 300 hurdles. Matt McNamara was third in the discus. The Warriors finished one point behind Morton to take third in the team standings.

Addison Trail Joe Atria won the 1,600-meter run at the West Suburban Gold meet at Hinsdale South on Friday. Juan Valdez was second in the 800 and Ron Duhling was third in the high jump to also earn all-conference honors. The Blazers took sixth in the team standings.

The Broncos' 4x800-meter relay qualified for the Class 2A state meet by finishing second at the Glenbard South sectional. Montini qualified with the sixth fastest time in 2A at 9:43.96. Theresa Connelly won the 800 to also qualify. Gianna Salzbrunn was third in the 300-meter low hurdles, but ran a state-qualifying time of 47.61 seconds.

Willowbrook Colleen Krawczykowski won the long jump at the Class 3A York sectional May 10 to qualify for state. She also qualified in the 300-meter low hurdles via a second place finish. Younger sister Molly Krawczykowski was fourth in the 800-meter run, but qualified with the fifth fastest time in 3A at 2:15.63. Junior Taylor Burton was second in the 400 to book her place at state as well.

The Warriors finished the regular season on a roll. Willowbrook won its own tournament on Saturday with a 5-0 record. The Warriors beat Leyden, Joliet Catholic and Geneva in pool play to advance to the semifinals. There, Willowbrook beat Riverside Brookfield 25-18, 23-25, 25-17 with 12 kills from Ben Wozniak. Austin Kirchner had six blocks and Jessie Yao had five. In the final the Warriors beat Wheaton North 25-19, 25-16. Woznick again led the way with nine kills. Matt Maksymec had 13 digs. Willowbrook finished off West Suburban Gold play with a 25-21, 25-12 win over Proviso East on Tuesday. The Warriors finished 5-1 in the Gold and 25-10 in the regular season after beating St. Joseph on Wednesday.

Colton Bach just missed out on qualifying for state event finals in the vault. He tied for 11th with a 9.05 and the cutoff of the top 10 was a 9.1. All-around qualifier Keawe Winstead was 26th on parallel bars and 41st on pommel horse. Bret Golz was 20th on floor.

Addison Trail Sophomore Daniel Baeza was 46th on vault at state. Aaron DeLaCruz was 48th on parallel bars.

Glenbard East
The No. 2 doubles team of Mac Harrell and Shaun Lee Pascual highlighted Glenbard East's showing at the DuPage Valley Conference tournament this weekend with a fourth place finish. The Rams finished sixth in the DVC.

The Rams tied for 17th at the state tournament over the weekend. Rachel Schlitter won her first-round match before losing twice. Kinga Glowik also went 1-2 with a win in the consolation draw. The doubles team of Kaely Cantua and Janah Sprenger-Mahal went 3-2 with a main draw win and two consolation wins. Emily Fulton and Elizabeth Schuck went 0-2 in doubles.

Willowbrook The Warriors tied for 17th at state. Singles players Amanda Wendt and Sandy Hernandez both went 2-2 with one main draw win and one consolation win. Leah Kania and Kelsey Cizek went 1-2 with a consolation win in doubles. Vanesha Mistry and Brooke Bimber went 0-2 in doubles.

The Broncos closed out the regular season with a 14-4 win over Lake Forest. Montini opened the playoffs Thursday against Nazareth in a sectional semifinal.
