Elmhurst church collects paper goods for veterans

Published: Thursday, May 16, 2013 4:37 p.m. CDT

ELMHURST – Bethel United Church of Christ and Bethel Learning Center members won't be riding on floats during the Elmhurst Memorial Day Parade May 27 – they'll be pushing shopping carts full of paper goods.

The two groups will be collecting paper towels, napkins, bathroom tissue and facial tissues to restock the supply cabinets at Hines Fisher House, which serves as a home away from home for veterans' family members, caregivers and friends.

Veterans often travel long distances to receive specialized medical care. Hines Fisher House, located on the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital campus, provides families a free place to stay while their veterans undergo treatment.

Parade attendees are asked to bring paper goods to fill shopping carts provided by Jewel-Osco at 153 Schiller St., Elmhurst.
