Dukes overpower LT for West Suburban Silver boys track title
Emma Fisher headlines York girls at sectionals
RIVER FOREST – The York boys track and field team outdid Lyons Township for the West Suburban Silver title on Saturday at Concordia University.
The Dukes scored 162 points to LT's 141 despite winning fewer titles than the Lions, which won the indoor Silver title.
Nate Mroz won the 3,200-meter run with a season-best time of 9:22.31. Teammate Chris May came in second.
The 4x800-meter relay team of Alex Bashqawi, Alex Baughman, Jack Achen and Matt Plowman gave the Dukes their only relay win on the day. York finished at 7:52.33 to edge LT's time of 7:52.61.
Reid Smith won both the high jump and the pole vault to rack up 20 valuable team points.
After that, York used its depth to overcome LT's six first-place finishes at the meet. Seven second-place finishes and six thirds helped the Dukes pick up the conference title.
Joining May as second-place finishers were Josh Farrar (100-meter dash), Andrew Iwaskiewicz (400), Plowman (800), Scott Milling (1,600), Jarvis Grace-Hill (300-meter hurdles), the 4x200 relay and the 4x400 relay.
Third-place finishers were Suraj Varghese (triple jump), Jeff Ostling (100), Alex Mimlitz (1600), Grace-Hill (110 hurdles), Mike Druffel (300 hurdles) and the 4x100 relay.
Fisher leads York girls to state
The Dukes placed fifth at their own sectional on Friday and sent three entries to the Class 3A state meet.
The 4x200 relay team of Emily Simo, Marissa Sparks, Josephine Jelinek and Shante Dansby. won York's only sectional title with a time of 1:44.83. That was the ninth-best qualifying time in 3A.
Senior Emma Fisher added two more notches to her decorated career by qualifying in the 1,600 and 3,200. Fisher was second to state-favorite Madeline Perez of Glenbard West in the 3,200 with a time of 10:34.86. Fisher qualified with the second fastest time in 3A and was still more than 13 seconds behind Perez.
In the 1,600, Fisher was fourth at the sectional. She came in at 5:06.24, the seventh-fastest 3A sectional time.
