Board approves asbestos removal ahead of Public Works facility renovation

LA GRANGE PARK – Four new trustees were sworn in at the Village Board’s May 14 meeting, while plans to renovate an aging Public Works facility moved forward.

Mario Fotino, James Kucera, Michael Sheehan and Robert Lautner took their seats on the board, and Village President Jim Discipio was also sworn in after defeating James Miller to secure a third term in April’s election.

During the meeting, the board approved environmental mitigation work on the village’s Public Works facility at 937 Barnsdale Road in advance of a $1 million renovation project. The village will work with a consultant to remove asbestos and lead from the facility, which used to house a firing range in the basement.

The board will vote May 28 on a design build agreement with Leopardo Construction. The company’s bid is in line with the village’s budgeted amount of $1,053,000, Village Manager Julia Cedillo said.

If approved, the renovation will include a new roof and other exterior improvements, as well as a new locker room for the department’s employees, who currently use a converted office.

“When the crews come back from a water main break or working out in the field, they [will] have a place to clean up,” Cedillo said.

Three state grants totaling $600,000 will help fund the project, scheduled for the summer. The village will pay the remaining amount.
