Softball playoff previews: Dukes roll into regionals with No. 2 seed

York junior Angela Scalzitti catches a blooper against Lyons Township on May 3 in Western Springs.

Class: 4A

Sectional seed: No. 2

Regional: York

Regional opener: 4:30 p.m. Tuesday vs. Lincoln Park or Schurz

What to watch: Despite a record that has hovered near .500 for most of the season, York received the No. 2 seed in the Resurrection sectional, which features a mix of Chicago schools, north suburban schools and three other West Suburban Conference schools.

After an 0-4 start, the Dukes got on a roll in time for West Suburban Silver play and finished second in the league.

York will be heavily favored to get to a regional final where they could see No. 7 Whitney Young or No. 9 Maine South at Bryan Middle School in Elmhurst.

A strong Trinity team is the top seed in the sectional, but considering the Dukes’ No. 2 spot, they will hope for a deep playoff run, as well.

“I’m not sure if it’s the first time we’ve ever been this high in a sectional, but it’s been a long time so it’s pretty awesome to get that,” York coach Drew McGuire said.

Junior Angela Scalzitti’s batting average has been north of .500 all season and she has 32 stolen bases. Her production from the leadoff spot is a danger to any team.

Sophomore Brooke Bandy (2.29 ERA) has emerged as the Dukes’ top pitcher on a team that has just two seniors. The young York team will hope to learn about the postseason on the fly.

“I thought adding a whole bunch of new faces to the team it was going to be a little bit of a rebuilding year, but these girls have picked up right where they left off,” McGuire said. “We’re on a good roll right now and we’ve got a shot in the playoffs.”

Timothy Christian

Class: 3A

Sectional seed: No. 7

Regional: Guerin

Regional opener: 4:30 p.m. Wednesday vs. Guerin

What to watch: The Trojans have struggled to compete in the Metro Suburban Conference but will have a shot to make up for that in the regional.

Timothy opens with host and No. 11 sectional seed Guerin in a semifinal. If the Trojans get past the Gators, No. 2 Elmwood Park likely awaits in the final.

The Tigers have had a solid year, sitting second in the MSC behind perennially strong Glenbard South. Elmwood beat Timothy, 4-3, in their first conference meeting of the year back on April 24.
