Respected education columnist, author to speak at Westmont HS

WESTMONT – On Monday, Westmont High School, in conjunction with several other school districts, will be hosting a conference for Advanced Placement teachers and leaders with Jay Mathews as the keynote speaker.

Mathews is an author, education columnist and blogger with the Washington Post.

"Few people have had the impact on secondary education and especially Advanced Placement that Jay Mathews has had," Westmont High School Principal Jack Baldermann wrote in a press release.

"His book on Escalante was turned into the movie 'Stand and Deliver' that put the spotlight on opening the doors to AP for so many students across the nation," according to Baldermann. "He then spent three years in high schools across the country and wrote 'Class Struggle: What is Right and Wrong with America’s Best High Schools.'"

Joining keynote speaker Mathews will be "some of the best practitioners and scholars" leading breakout sessions in Advanced Placement Social Studies, English, and Argumentative Writing as it pertains to AP across all disciplines, the release states.

Teachers interested in attending the Monday conference – cost to attend is $125 – should contact Baldermann at 708-243-0597.
