LOMBARD – Glenbard East boys volleyball is playing with more energy and consistency, just at the right time.
The Rams picked up DuPage Valley Conference sweeps over West Chicago, Wheaton Warrenville South and West Aurora to finish 9-5 in the DVC. Tuesday’s win over the defending state champion Tigers gave East a season sweep over its rival. Coach Marci Maier said the match had a playoff-like atmosphere.
“It’s more what you would see in playoff ball,” Maier said. “We’re starting to do that right before the right time.
“We seem to be playing better and better here at the end of the season.”
Penn State-recruit Joey Farrell continues to lead the Rams offensively, but fellow senior Zach Greene still is out with an ankle injury. Greene was having a strong season before the injury, but Danny Carlson has stepped up in his place.
The 6-foot-4 senior middle hitter joined the team this year after not playing the sport since eighth grade and has fit in well.
“Early on in the season he was not ready to go,” Maier said of Carlson. “He was learning what it meant to play at the level we play at.
“Now he’s really doing a nice job for us in the middle.”
The Rams (23-12, 9-5 DVC) open postseason play Tuesday as the No. 7 seed in the Proviso West sectional. East hosts the regional and will play the winner of No. 10 Metea Valley and No. 23 Montini in a semifinal.
The Rams needed three games to beat Metea Valley twice this season so even the first match will be a tough test.
“It’s not an easy road,” Maier said. “Our first game is not even a shoe-in, so it’s playoff atmosphere. You lose and you’re done.”
While the varsity team prepares for the playoffs, the JV and freshman level teams finished up their seasons as DVC champs. The freshman team went undefeated in the league while the JV squad had a 13-1 DVC record.
