Baseball playoff preview: York faces tough early challenges

York

Class: 4A

Sectional seed: No. 8

Regional: Schaumburg

Regional opener: 6:30 p.m. Wednesday vs. Willowbrook

What to watch: The Dukes have a tricky draw in the regional, which will be at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium.

In the opener, York will take on No. 9 Willowbrook, a team playing its best ball of the season. The Warriors have won 15 of 18 since a 5-7 start and took two of three from well-regarded Downers Grove South earlier this month.

The Dukes and Warriors met May 10 in a West Suburban crossover and Willowbrook won, 6-1. Neither team threw top pitchers, but the playoff meeting could provide a match up between two quality aces, York’s River Pitlock and Willowbrook’s Dave Cericola.

If York survives Cericola and the streaking Warriors, No. 1 sectional seed Lake Park likely awaits in the regional final.

“It will be tough because we’ll have to face Cericola from Willowbrook, who’s been good,” said York coach Dave Kalal. “If we win that game we’ll have to face the No. 1 team. I still believe that we have the pitching to be able to compete, but it’s just a matter of if we can glove it.”
