BOLINGBROOK – Bolingbrook resident Yerika Sojo has been named PETA's "Sexiest Vegan Next Door."
Sojo beat out nine other female finalists in PETA's annual contest, which was limited to vegans for the first time this year.
The owner Logan Square's Azucar Vegan Bakery, Sojo is also an accomplished model, photographer, makeup artist, dental assistant and substance abuse counselor.
Still, one of her strongest passions remains advocating for animal rights and educating others about animal cruelty.
"I like when people – strangers, friends, or family – come to me and ask me, how can I be vegan like you, what can I do to help animals?" Sojo said, detailing how she once convinced a friend to go vegan after teaching her about the horrible abuses suffered by pigs on factory farms.
Sojo has also participated in protests against circuses, puppy mills, and KFC.
Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Sojo has lived in Bolingbrook for 10 years.
Sojo and fellow Sexiest Vegan Next Door 2013 winner John Halloran, of Rhode Island, were selected based on a series of factors, including votes. Both won a free trip to Hawaii, courtesy of HumaneTrip.com
