Annual DuPage River Sweep planned for Saturday in Bolingbrook

BOLINGBROOK – Bolingbrook will do its part in the 2013 DuPage River Sweep planned for Saturday.

Since 1991, the annual river cleanup has been a countywide, self-coordinated event that encourages volunteers to clean the river and restore the surrounding land to its natural state, according to the Conservation Foundation website.

In 2012, 620 volunteers from 18 communities swept about 30 miles of shoreline and removed nine tons of trash and debris from the DuPage River and its tributaries, according to the website.

The DuPage River Sweep encompasses the east and west branches of the DuPage River and Salt Creek, as well as many tributaries.

Bolingbrook Park District staff and volunteers will focus on the river’s east branch and the surrounding wooded areas.

Bolingbrook Park District Natural Resources Crew Leader Kate Dorick is recruiting and coordinating local volunteers for the 2013 sweep, planned for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. She says that this year will be crucial because of the recent storms and floods.

“This year’s cleanup is really important, and volunteers will be removing debris and trash from the river and surrounding wooded areas,” said Dorick, explaining the April storms littered the shoreline.

Bolingbrook residents will meet about 9 a.m. at Hidden Lakes Historic Trout Farm, where they will be given instructions and equipment.

Volunteers should “dress for the weather” and wear pants, long sleeves, and hiking boots or shoes with good traction, Dorick said.

If possible, Dorick asked volunteers to bring personal canoes that will be assigned to skimming and cleaning the river.

If inclement weather poses a problem, volunteers will be notified of a make-up date, Dorick said.
