ELMHURST – An Elmhurst woman was pronounced dead Saturday night, succumbing to injuries sustained from an auto accident that left her and her grandson hospitalized, according to the Elmhurst Police Department.

Elmhurst residents Ophelia Morales, 85, and her 23-year-old grandson Nicholas Morales were crossing the intersection of S. York Street and E. Van Buren Street about 2:40 p.m. Saturday when they were both struck by a car traveling southbound on York Street, according to police.

Both Ophelia and Nicholas Morales were transported to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, according to Deputy Chief James Kveton.

Nicholas Morales was treated for minor injuries and released, but Ophelia Morales was transferred to Maywood's Loyola Medical Center to treat more severe injuries, Kveton said.

Ophelia Morales died at Loyola Medical Center Saturday evening, Kveton said.

The incident is not a hit and run, police said, but any information about the driver has yet to be released.

The incident is still being investigated by the Elmhurst Police Department and DuPage County Accident Reconstruction Task Force.

There is no traffic light at the intersection of E. Van Buren Street and S. York Street.
