Wheaton Warrenville South High School student named U.S. Presidential Scholar

WHEATON – Wheaton Warrenville High School student Adam Erickson was one of the 141 high school seniors to be named a U.S. Presidential Scholar this year by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

The winners were determined from a pool of over 3,300 candidates, and was based off of academic performance, artistic excellence, essays, recommendations, and school evaluations as well as community service, leadership, and a "demonstrated commitment to high ideals."

"Presidential Scholars demonstrate the accomplishments that can be made when students challenge themselves, set the highest standards, and commit themselves to excellence," Duncan said. "I'm honored to celebrate their creativity, hard work, and community service, and I encourage them—and all students—to continue to showcase the capacity for greatness in our nation's young people."

Erickson is slated to go to Yale University in the fall, and hopes to major in molecular biophysics and biochemistry. He also scored a perfect 36 on his ACT, has helped raise almost $100,000 for cancer research, was recently named a National Merit finalist and received one of Wheaton's "Good Citizen awards" during his time as president of the Wheaton Warrenville South Key Club.
