Six Silver champs lead Lyons Township into sectionals
RIVER FOREST – Six Lions won conference titles, but Lyons Township was topped by York for the West Suburban Silver boys track and field championship.
LT had more wins, but York’s depth proved too much to overcome. The Dukes won the meet with 162 points while the Lions, which won the indoor conference title, had 141 on Friday at Concordia University.
Matt Harris won the long jump (22 feet, 11 inches) and the 110-meter hurdles (14.9 seconds) and competed in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays to make for a busy day. The 4x100 was second and the 4x200 was third.
Jimmy Rhode, Antwan Swan, Alex Lima and Lino Mogorovic won the 4x400 with a time of 3:23.04. All four relays placed in the top three.
Mogorovic joined Harris as a four-event runner. He won the 300 hurdles (38.75) and finished behind Harris for second in the 110 hurdles. The senior also ran in the 4x100 and 4x400.
Ed McCarter won the 800 (1:57.12) and Lima was third. Both runners helped the 4x800 take second.
Jimmy Mitchell and Nick Demes formed a strong duo of throwers. Mitchell won the shot put (54-9.5) and was fourth in the discus. Demes was second in both.
The Lions will have to shrug off the disappointment of the second-place conference finish by the time the sectional meet rolls around Friday. LT is hosting and will see Metro Suburban Conference-champ Riverside Brookfield, West Suburban Gold runner-up Morton and 12 Chicago teams, including Mt. Carmel, Simeon and St. Rita.
