Prep roundup: LT gymnastics takes fifth in state

BOYS GYMNASTICS

Lyons Township

The Lions grabbed fifth place at the state tournament at Lincoln-Way East over the weekend. LT posted a season-high 149.7 points to finish ahead of West Suburban Silver schools Downers Grove North and Hinsdale Central, which had scored higher than the Lions at both the conference and sectional meets.

Sophomore Chris Rediehs was sixth in the all around with a 54.15. Rediehs also placed third on the horizontal bar (9.2), sixth on the parallel bars (9.15) and 10th on rings (7.1). Juniors Wll Gallucci and Noah Mennemeier also made the event finals. Gallucci was seventh on the rings (8.9) and Mennemeier tied for 11th on the pommel horse (7.6).

BASEBALL

Nazareth

The Roadrunners picked up their first two-game sweep of an East Suburban Catholic Conference opponent on Saturday. Nazareth beat St. Patrick 11-9 and 6-1. Mike Noesen was 5-for-6 in the doubleheader and Mike Stromberg was 4-for-7. Mike Greene and Joseph Nelson picked up the wins on the mound.

St. Joseph

The Chargers clinched a share of their first conference championship since 1967 with a 2-0 win over Bishop McNamara on Saturday. Ryan Moritz pitched a three-hitter and Mike Pagliuco was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Joe DeLuna was 2-for-3 with a home run.

St. Joe finished 12-8 in the Chicago Catholic League White. Second-place De La Salle entered Tuesday's game against Seton with an 11-8 record.

"It's a really big accomplishment," said St. Joe coach Jay Meath. "We're just trying to move the program forward."

SOFTBALL

Lyons Township

LT began last week with back-to-back wins against Hinsdale Central and followed up with a 6-0 win at Proviso West. On Friday LT lost to Glenbard West 4-1. After splitting a nonconference doubleheader with Wheaton North on Saturday, the Lions stunned Silver-leader Downers Grove North 3-2 on Monday. Alyssa Collins was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Ashley Koziol struck out eight in a complete game.

Morton

The Mustangs went 2-2 in West Suburban Gold games last week. Morton beat Leyden 8-1, Addison Trail 5-1 and lost 2-1 to Willowbrook and 3-1 to Hinsdale South. Alyssa Galasso allowed just three hits against the Warriors, but Willowbrook scored two in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good.

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs picked up conference wins over Fenton (15-4) and Illiana Christian (11-2) last week. Emily Hastings and Emma Schander each had three hits and a home run against Illiana.

Nazareth

The Roadrunners bounced back from a 7-0 loss to Fenwick on May 8 with a doubleheader sweep of Marian Catholic on Friday. Nazareth won Game 1 3-2 with three hits from Colleen McGivney. The Roadrunners took Game 2 6-5.

Fenwick

The Friars picked up East Suburban Catholic Conference wins over Benet and Nazareth last week. Fenwick beat the Redwings 4-3 on May 7 thanks to a complete game from Jess Mrozek. The Friars downed Nazareth 7-0 the next day with Val Parrelli firing a three-hitter. Mrozek blasted a home run. On Thursday, Fenwick lost to Sandburg 8-6 despite scoring six runs in the second inning.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lyons Township

The Lions finished 4-1 in the West Suburban Silver after thumping Oak Park-River Forest 6-0 on May 7. Audrey Anfield had a hat trick and Abbie Pasquinelli had a goal and an assist. Emily Lange and Tina Cevizovic also scored and Sam Kopping earned the shutout in goal. LT, the No. 2 seed in the Hinsdale Central sectional, opened the postseason Tuesday against Addison Trail.

Morton

Morton finished 4-2 in the West Suburban Gold after beating Willowbrook 4-0 on May 7. Nelly Romero had three goals and an assist in the win. The Mustangs also beat Riverside Brookfield 3-0 on Thursday. Morton starts the playoffs with a regional semifinal at No. 3 seed York on Wednesday.

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs lost to Morton 3-0 on Thursday to finish the regular season with a 7-11 record. RB opens the postseason Wednesday at Solorio Academy.

Nazareth

The Roadrunners finished the regular season on a five-match unbeaten run. Nazareth beat Mother McAuley 2-1 on May 7 with goals from Nicole Moore and Mo Culligan. The regular-season finale was a 3-3 tie against Maine South. Megan Tobin scored twice and Culligan once. The No. 3 seed Roadrunners began the postseason Tuesday against Gage Park.

Fenwick

The Friars lost their final two East Suburban Catholic Conference matches to lose any chance of winning the league title. Fenwick lost to league champ Carmel 3-0 on May 7 and 3-1 to St. Viator on Thursday. The Friars are the top seed in the Class 2A Riverside Brookfield sectional.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Lyons Township

The Lions continued their hot season with a tournament title Saturday at Richards. LT defeated Warren 25-17, 25-14 in the quarterfinals and St. Rita 25-20, 32-30 in the semis. The Lions won their second tournament title of the season by beating Brother Rice 20-25, 25-22, 25-23 in the final.

Morton

The Mustangs placed sixth at the Richards Invite over the weekend. Morton lost to Brother Rice 17-25, 9-25 in a quarterfinal but bounced back with a win over Downers Grove North 25-17, 25-14. The Mustangs fell in three games to Warren in the fifth-place match 21-25, 28-26, 14-25.

Proviso West

The Panthers knocked off district-rival Proviso East 25-9, 25-16 on Thursday.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Nazareth

The Roadrunners were fourth at the East Suburban Catholic Conference meet on Thursday at Notre Dame. Cody Roll was second in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Zachery Manuel was second in the long jump and Decx Kelly was second in the high jump. The 4x100 relay was second and the 4x200 was third.

Fenwick

The Friars placed 10th at the Chicago Catholic League championships on Saturday. Matthew Dumon was Fenwick's top finisher, fourth in the 1,600-meter run.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

Riverside Brookfield

Sophomore pole vaulter Jackie LaBelle earned RB's only state bid by taking second at the Class 3A Lyons Township sectional on Friday. LaBelle cleared 9 feet, 6 inches to qualify.

RB was sixth out of 12 teams at the meet, but had only two seniors, Danielle Witken and Alma Rodriguez, compete.

Nazareth

Megan O'Kane took second in the 800-meter run at the Class 2A Glenbard South sectional to be the lone Roadrunner to qualify for state.

Fenwick

The Friars sent five entries to state from the Class 2A Glenbard South sectional. Olivia Ryan and Briana Daley went one-two in the 1,600-meter run to return to state. Grace Cronin also advanced in the 300-meter hurdles. The 4x800 relay won the sectional and the 4x400 also qualified.

St. Joseph

Shaya Minter was the lone Charger to qualify for state from the Class 2A Glenbard South sectional. Minter was second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.41 seconds.

Proviso West

Emani Johnson booked her spot at state in three events. Johnson won the 100 and 200 at the Class 3A York sectional and finished third in the long jump with a state-qualifying distance of 17 feet, 5.5 inches.

BOYS WATER POLO

Morton

The Mustangs fell to Oak Park-River Forest 11-5 in a sectional quarterfinal on Thursday.

Riverside Brookfield

After beating Westinghouse 9-4 in a first-round playoff game, RB lost to eventual sectional champion Fenwick 23-6 in a quarterfinal on Thursday. David Kidwell and Paul Sitkiewicz each scored twice in the loss.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Morton

The Mustangs lost to Maine South in a quarterfinal of the Fenwick sectional May 8.

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs lost to Lyons Township 12-2 on May 8 to see the season come to a close in a sectional quarterfinal.

BOYS TENNIS

Riverside Brookfield

RB placed sixth at the Metro Suburban Conference boys tennis meet on Saturday. Peter Pierdinock at No. 2 singles and J.P. Sengstock at No. 3 singles placed fourth.

Nazareth

The Roadrunners were fourth at the East Suburban Catholic Conference meet on Saturday. Third-place finishers were Mike Straface (No. 2 singles) and the No. 2 doubles team of Cameron Franko and Paul Dragich.

Fenwick

The Friars came in third at the Chicago Catholic League tournament on Saturday. Fenwick scored 29 points to finish behind St. Ignatius and Loyola, which scored 37 each.

BOYS LACROSSE

Lyons Township

The Lions beat St. Charles North 8-7 in overtime on Saturday. LT plays Hinsdale Central this upcoming Saturday in the regular-season finale. The winner will take the West Suburban Conference title.

RUGBY

Morton

The Mustangs won 43-7 at Lincoln Way on Friday. They completed the regular season with Monday's game at Neuqua Valley.
