Neighbors Bolingbrook, Plainfield East to meet in regional opener

Playoff game will be first meeting between two schools this season

In the baseball postseason, all it takes is one game for a team to build momentum for a long playoff run. Bolingbrook and Plainfield East will each have that goal in mind when they face off in Monday's playoff opener.

Bolingbrook

Class: 4A

Sectional seed: No. 16

Regional: Hinsdale Central

Regional opener: 4:30 p.m. Monday vs. No. 18 Plainfield East at Bolingbrook

What to watch: Although separated by only a few miles, the Raiders and Bengals will face each other for the first time this season. They were scheduled to meet March 26, but weather canceled the game and it was not rescheduled.

Pitchers Brad Elmore, Mario Samuel, Miguel Silva and Steve Waldrop are all key pieces to Bolingbrook’s arsenal and have been dominant on the mound at times this spring. The key for the Raiders is to get the bats going. Among regulars, only Nick Sramek and Jacob Huff are hitting more than .300, and the team average is hovering just more than .250.

On the positive side, the Raiders seemed to be trending in the right direction with a recent three-game winning streak, and they will see plenty of live pitching before the playoff opener as they were slated to play Willowbrook (4:30 p.m. today), Joliet West (4:30 p.m. Thursday) and Richards (10 a.m. Saturday) at home before facing the Bengals.

If Bolingbrook can move past Plainfield East, it would face No. 1 sectional seed Downers Grove South in a regional semifinal game at 4:30 p.m. May 22 at Hinsdale Central.

Plainfield East

Class: 4A

Sectional seed: No. 18

Regional: Hinsdale Central

Regional opener: 4:30 p.m. May 20 vs. No. 16 Bolingbrook at Bolingbrook

What to watch: The Bengals will make the short trip over to Bolingbrook for the playoff opener Monday afternoon, but before that they were scheduled to play a three-game series against Oswego Tuesday through Thursday and play a nonconference game against Lockport on Friday night.

East will look to turn things around in its final four regular-season games. Just 2-4 in their past six games before the Oswego series opener, the Bengals will aim to capture a bit of momentum to carry them through their playoff run.

If Plainfield East can win the playoff opener, it would move on to face No. 1 sectional seed Downers Grove South in a regional semifinal game at 4:30 p.m. May 22 at Hinsdale Central.
