Morton pole vaulters, 2-milers finish 1-2 at Gold meet

Morton girls also send pair to state

DARIEN – Morton boys track and field edged Willowbrook and Hinsdale South to take second in the West Suburban Gold meet Friday at Hinsdale South.

Downers Grove South won the meet with 195 points to run away from the rest of the field. Morton scored 96 points to finish just ahead of the Warriors and Hornets.

The Casallo brothers, Brian and Alan, scored valuable points in the pole vault by claiming the top two spots in the event. Brian Casallo won pole vault by clearing 13 feet, 9 inches. Alan Casallo was second at 11-6.

Omero Montalvo and Mateo Hernandez matched the one-two feat in the 3,200-meter run. Montalvo came in at 9:54.7 and Hernandez was right behind with a time of 9:55.02. The distance duo also scored in the 1,600 with Montalvo taking third in the event and Hernandez fourth.

Tovari Thomas was Morton’s other highest finisher by tying for second in the 100. He clocked in at 11.35 seconds, matching the time of Leyden’s Ryan Sarno.

The impressive part about Morton’s second-place team finish is that the Mustangs did so with only five top-two finishes. Morton had eight third- or fourth-place finishes to tally up the points and finish ahead of Willowbrook and Hinsdale South.

The 4x200 relay of Matt Cabrera, Eddie Dominguez, Malik LaMothe and Martin Reyes and the 4x800 relay of Oscar Arango, Christian Sanchez, Eli Serrato and Arvin Servin were both third.

Roman Villa earned another third in the 800.

Fourth-place finishers were Jesse Zermeno (discus), Erick Rivas (110 hurdles) and Chris Zavala (800).

Morton will compete at the Lyons Township sectional Friday.

Morton girls send 2 to state

Lili Mendez and Janeka Stokes qualified for the Class 3A state meet and helped the Mustangs place third at the Lyons Township sectional on Friday.

Stokes was third in the high jump, but cleared the state-qualifying height to book her place at state. Stokes jumped 4 feet, 9 inches.

Mendez was second in the shot put with a throw of 36-2.
