Villa Park trustee ballots to be reviewed after close election

VILLA PARK – The ballots from eight Villa Park precincts will be reviewed in a special, re-examination process Tuesday morning at the request of trustee candidate Tony Gurdak.

Gurdak filed a petition for a discovery recount after the DuPage County Election Commission certified the results of the April 9 election and indicated that Gurdak lost to candidate John Davis by three votes.

The ballot review is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday at the election commission's warehouse in Aurora. For the process, Gurdak was able to select the ballots from 25 percent of the village's precincts, or eight precincts, to be reviewed.

He said he's selected the largest precincts to be reviewed because there is a greater chance to find inaccuracies from a larger number of ballots.

This process is not a recount, but could set the stage for one in the future.

"To create a question that raises some reason for a total recount, that's what we're shooting for," Gurdak said.

The decision for a total recount to be conducted would ultimately be made by a circuit judge.

Villa Park's new village president, Deborah Bullwinkel, and trustees Bob Wagner and Robert Taglia are scheduled to be sworn in during Monday's Village Board meeting. John Davis will not be sworn in at this time.
