Tie game called due to weather in Downers Grove North-South softball clash
DOWNERS GROVE - Mother Nature did it again.
Last year lightning and rain halted the softball matchup between Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South, and when the two teams met Thursday night at McCollum Park, a steady and intensifying rain brought things to an end in the fifth inning with the score knotted at 3-3.
A rain-out date was scheduled for May 10, but the Mustangs will play a conference game instead. The five innings played were at least more than the three the teams played last year.
North's Elaine Heflin set down the Mustangs in order through three innings and made it look as if the Trojans' first inning run — Ali Woitivich reached on an error and scored on an error — would hold up for the win.
North made it 2-0 in the fourth when Kaylee Newstrom and Brittany Claver hit back-to-back one-out doubles, but the Mustangs responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Kristen Bialek an Melissa Orton walked to start the inning and moved up on Jess Andree's sacrifice bunt. Caitlyn Daly's single scored Bialek, and Orton came home on Caroline Hedgcock's groundout.
Maddie Wojciak reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch in North's half of the fifth, and Bialek (walk) scored on Andree's long single in the bottom of the frame before the game was called.
