Insects added to menu at Lisle's Morton Arboretum

LISLE – The larger-than-life insects in David Rogers' Big Bugs exhibition will draw the most attention at The Morton Arboretum this weekend, but there will also be bite-size bugs at the Arboretum Store for brave gourmets.

To accompany the exhibition, the shop will offer, among others, Crick-ettes and Larvets, which come in potato chip-like flavors such as BBQ, Mexican spice, bacon and cheese, salt 'n vinegar and sour cream and onion.

For a sweeter snack, the store has chocolate-dipped grasshoppers.

Arboretum media relations specialist Sarah Clark said the edible bug snacks have been flying off the shelves, though hopping seems more likely.

Cricket Lickits and Ant Candy – suckers with crickets and ants inside – round out the food selection. The insects look like they are trapped in amber, making them a visual treat as well.

Arboretum patrons can sample these edible bugs during the "Goin' Buggy" celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
