Downers Grove Township is proud to announce the formation of its 501(c)(3) Not-For-Profit Oak Hill/Oak Crest Foundation.
Since 1985, Downers Grove Township has been the caretaker of Oak Hill/Oak Crest Cemeteries. Oak Hill/Oak Crest Foundation is an independent, nonprofit organization Section 501 (c)(3) pursuing its mission of providing services for the Downers Grove Township Oak Hill Oak Crest cemeteries.
Oak Hill and Oak Crest cemeteries are between Glenview and Howard streets, in unincorporated Downers Grove and Lisle. The Oak Hill Cemetery was a piece of land that was donated in 1865 by Dexter Stanley. Local families buried in Oak Hill include Downer Stanley, Dixon, Carpenter and Rogers, to name a few.
Recently, Downers Grove Township took initiative to create this 501 (c)(3) with the intent to preserve the dignity of the cemeteries. A board of directors that is not compensated for its services governs the foundation.
The Oak Hill/Oak Crest Foundation was established as a nonprofit organization to provide restoration of the cemeteries.
Restoration projects include the repair and restoration of headstones and removal of brush that has grown over the headstones. Also, the foundation hopes to replace the fencing surrounding the cemeteries to ensure the security of the land.
Finally, landscaping maintenance is necessary to preserve the dignity of the properties. The Oak Hill/Oak Crest Foundation’s mission is to restore the cemeteries to their original condition.
But the foundation cannot do it alone. Donations are necessary to keep these historical cemeteries operational. We need the support of the community.
