A capital improvement project has begun along Maple Avenue from Burlington Avenue to 47th Street.

BROOKFIELD – While a capital improvement project for Maple Avenue in Brookfield was set to begin this week, the major work won’t start until after the school season ends.

Preliminary work on the overlay project began Monday, said Bill Peterhansen of the Westchester-based Edwin Hancock Engineering Company, Brookfield’s engineering firm. The area to be covered is Maple Avenue from Burlington Avenue to 47th Street he said.

Improvements to be made include grinding and resurfacing the roadway, said Brookfield Village Manager Riccardo Ginex. The project also will oversee replacing deteriorating sections of sewers, curbs and gutters along with paveway patching.

“We really won’t do any of the resurfacing until the second week of June because of the schools,” Ginex said. “We don’t want to disrupt the buses.”

The Illinois Department of Transportation estimated the project will cost about $635,815, Ginex said. The village will fund about 40 percent of this from its allotment of motor fuel taxes and a grant from the West Central Municipal Conference, he said.

The remainder of the cost will be paid by IDOT, Peterhansen said. J.A. Johnson Paving in Arlington Heights is doing the work.

“The project will be done in two phases: from Burlington Avenue to Ogden Avenue, and then from Ogden Avenue to 47th Street,” Ginex said. “For the majority of time, the roads will be open. The only time it will be closed, it will be closed in sections, and this will be when they resurface the street.”

Ginex said the project should cause only minor interruptions. Village officials anticipate that it will be completed by the end of June, he said.
