Many high school players are debuting in the spotlight this spring for area baseball and softball teams – from seniors stepping into leadership roles to underclassmen earning starting varsity jobs.

Grace Cody

School: Riverside Brookfield softball

Class: Junior

Position: Outfielder

Impact: For all the Bulldogs' struggles this year, they are still putting up big numbers offensively. Cody is in her first year on varsity and isn't having too much trouble adjusting. The center fielder went on an eight-game hitting streak that included four multi-hit games and six doubles after starting the season in an 0-14 slump.

Joe Duffy

School: Riverside Brookfield baseball

Class: Senior

Position: Outfielder

Impact: Duffy had just one hit in limited at-bats last season. Now, the senior has carved a niche on the Bulldogs with a .352 batting average entering last week's action. Duffy also contributed 18 RBIs and 16 runs scored in 22 games.
