Rising stars emerge for area high school baseball, softball teams

Many high school players are debuting in the spotlight this spring for area baseball and softball teams – from seniors stepping into leadership roles to underclassmen earning starting varsity jobs.

Pete Doughty

School: York baseball

Class: Senior

Position: Outfield

Impact: Doughty has patrolled center field to give the Dukes a senior leader at a key spot on defense. He also has played his way into the cleanup spot. Doughty had 13 RBIs and 12 runs scored entering Thursday to go with a .288 batting average.

Isabella Jaeger

School: York softball

Class: Sophomore

Position: First base

Impact: Jaeger has started to adjust to the varsity level and is streaking to a .343 batting average entering Thursday. She was tied for second on the team in RBIs and second in runs. Jaeger also made a big contribution with a walk-off home run against Glenbard West on April 29.

Brandon Scott

School: Timothy Christian baseball

Class: Senior

Position: First base

Impact: Scott brings a powerful bat to the Trojans’ batting order. He is the team leader with five home runs and a .340 batting average through Tuesday. He also has 16 RBIs and 10 runs scored through 19 games.

Catherine Klosterman

School: IC Catholic softball

Class: Freshman

Position: Pitcher/infield

Impact: Klosterman has been a solid addition as the Knights’ No. 2 pitcher and has been a staple in the second spot in the batting order. She has five wins in the circle including a six-inning no-hitter against Proviso West that featured 13 strikeouts. Entering Wednesday, Klosterman had 68 strikeouts in 46-2/3 innings pitched.

Abby Solem

School: York softball

Class: Freshman

Position: Third base

Impact: Solem has stepped right into the Dukes’ squad this year and led the team in extra base hits (nine), RBIs (21) and was second in batting average (.383) entering Thursday. “She’s been playing a stellar third base for us this year,” York coach Drew McGuire said. “She’s been an awesome addition to this team, especially as a freshman being able to step up and play.”

Sean Sutton

School: IC Catholic baseball

Class: Junior

Position: Third base

Impact: Sutton has been an impressive fill in at third base for the Knights. The junior had a .339 batting average with 15 RBIs through May 8.
