The Dukes lost to Hinsdale Central, 1-0, on May 2 to fall out of contention in the West Suburban Silver. York beat Proviso West, 8-0, on Tuesday to finish the WSS with a 4-2 record and take third in the league. The Dukes are the No. 3 seed in the Hinsdale Central sectional and will begin the postseason Wednesday against No. 14 Morton. York hosts the regional.
The Dukes had an weekend off from West Suburban Silver play, but played three crossovers. On May 2, York beat Gold-leader Hinsdale South, 8-1. Duke ace River Pitlock pitched a complete-game four-hitter and didn’t allow any earned runs. He had nine strikeouts and no walks. Anthony Santos led the offense with a 3-for-3 day that included an RBI and two runs scored.
On Friday, York lost, 7-0, to Downers Grove South and was limited to one hit, a Pete Doughty single. The Dukes returned to action Monday in an 8-7 loss to Morton. Josh Paparone had three doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored in the loss. Pitlock and Santos also had two hits.
York completes the WSS schedule with a three-game set against Lyons Township, beginning with a doubleheader Saturday in Western Springs.
The Trojans won the final two games of last week’s series against Fenton to take the series. Timothy won, 4-1, on May 1 and 9-3, on May 2. Michael Wieringa had a complete game and gave up one earned run in the 9-3 victory while Cole Miller was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Saturday was a makeup doubleheader against Illiana Christian. The Trojans lost, 6-5 and 10-3.
Timothy lost the series opener to Elmwood Park, 4-3, on Tuesday. Luke Davidson was 3-for-4 and Brandon Scott was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. The Trojans evened the series with a 7-6 win Wednesday. Emerson Bandemer earned the win and was 3-for-5 with an RBI at the plate.
The Knights beat St. Viator, 3-2, May 3 with two hits each from Jessica Conenna and Anjella Farmer. IC swept a split doubleheader on Saturday, beating St. Joseph, 7-0 and Wheaton Academy, 5-1. Catherine Klosterman had 12 strikeouts in the shutout against St. Joe’s and Conenna was 4-for-4. Conenna struck out 10 batters in the Suburban Christian Conference win over Wheaton Academy. Klosterman, Maria Kieliszewski, Conenna and Lindsey Montoya each had two hits.
IC beat St. Edward, 7-3, on Monday. Gabby Curran was 4-for-4 and Farmer had three hits and a home run. The Knight kept rolling in a 10-0 six-inning victory over Guerin. Kieliszewski had three hits and Klosterman struck out while allowing two hits in a complete game.
The streak reached six in a row with a 2-1 win over Chicago Christian on Wednesday. Conenna struck out seven in a complete game and was 2-for-3 at the plate.
IC Catholic, Timothy Christian
The two Class 1A Elmhurst schools will meet for a regional final at Elmhurst College on Saturday after both teams won semifinals in routs Tuesday. Top-seeded IC beat Our Lady of Tepeyac, 6-0, and No. 2 seed Timothy beat St. Joseph, 7-0. K.C. Morris had two goals and an assist while Angela Toritto, Hannah Hartnett and Erin Maloney also scored one each.
IC finished off the regular season with a 3-1 win over Guerin on Sunday. Morris, Toritto and Emily Hartnett scored in the win.
The Dukes took third at their invite Saturday. York lost to Rolling Meadows in the semifinals 27-26, 25-14, but finished with a win over Addison Trail in the third-place match. The Dukes beat the Blazers 13-25, 26-24, 15-8.
BOYS TRACK & FIELD
The Dukes hosted the DuPage County meet Friday. York picked up three wins at the meet and 12 top-three finishes.
Matt Plowman won the 1,600 and Reid Smith came in first in the high jump. Ruthvik Sunil-Kumar wasn’t far behind Smith, taking third in the high jump. The Dukes’ other win came in the 4 x 200 relay. The 4 x 100 and 4 x 800 relays were second and the 4 x 400 came in third. Jarvis Grace-Hill picked up second in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Emmett McCoy was second in the 200, Scott Milling was second in the 3,200 and Alex Bashqawi was third in the 1,600.
Relays highlighted the Knights’ performance Saturday in the Class 1A field of the Carlin Nalley Invitational at Benedictine University. IC’s 4 x 400 relay team of Arturo Chaidez, Brian Anzures, Silvestre Saucedo and Tim Hipskind took first place with a time of 3:35.09. The 4 x 100 relay team of Sam Rose, David Rico, Saucedo and Hipskind took second. Rose, Anzures, Saucedo and Hipskind placed third in the 4 x 200.
Jake Hooker won the 300-meter hurdles and was second in the 110-meter hurdles Saturday at the Class 1A Carlin Nalley Invitational at Benedictine. Fourth-place finishers were Rich Medina in the 200 and the 4 x 800 relay team of Jim Mittlestaedt, Christian Rasmussen, Andrew Groenewold and Jim Larkin.
Sam Bode led the Dukes to a fifth-place finish at the Downers Grove North sectional May 3. York totaled 135.95 points. Bode earned spots at this weekend’s state tournament in the all-around, floor exercise, pommel horse, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar . Other state qualifiers were John DiCianni (floor exercise) and Bryce Simpson (pommel horse, horizontal bar).
The Dukes won the eight-team Fenton Invite on Saturday. York advanced to the final in each of the five brackets and picked up four titles. Jonathon Elsey (No. 1 singles) and Brendan Peterson (No. 2) won their three matches without losing a set. Justin Loescher and Adam Camp won at No. 2 doubles and Liam Hagan and Matt Molayal picked up the title at No. 3 doubles. Earlier this week, the Dukes beat Hinsdale South and Maine South in nonconference matches.
The Dukes won a sectional title and qualified both singles players and both doubles teams to state. Georgia Schneider beat teammate Julia Carlson in the singles final. Lauren Liang and Karen Altergott won the doubles tournament without dropping a set. Cori D’Onofrio and Natalie Rizzo were third in doubles.
BOYS WATER POLO
After beating Morton, 22-9, May 3, the Dukes advanced to the semifinals of the West Suburban Conference tournament at York. In the semis York fell to top-seed and eventual champion Lyons Township, 15-5. The Dukes began postseason play Thursday in a sectional quarterfinal at Neuqua Valley against the hosts.
GIRLS WATER POLO
Like the boys water polo team, York beat Morton in the quarterfinals (14-11), but lost to Lyons Township, 11-6, in the semifinals of the West Suburban Conference tournament at LT.
The Dukes beat Oak Park-River Forest, 8-7, in a sectional quarterfinal Wednesday at Fenwick. They will get another crack at LT today.
