District 99 School Board names president, shows divide among board members

DOWNERS GROVE – The Community High School District 99 School Board picked its new president and vice president Monday night with votes reinforcing a divide among two groups of members.

The board voted 4-3 to elect Nancy Kupka as president over Debbie Boyle. Boyle, Keith Matune and Michael Davenport voted against Kupka.

Rick Pavinato, who was elected to the board for the first time this spring, was elected as vice president over Davenport with a 4-3 vote. The dissenting votes were again cast by Boyle, Matune and Davenport.

Board member Julia Beckman nominated Kupka, and Board member Terry Pavesich nominated Pavinato.

The lines drawn by Monday night's votes were reflective of the April 9 election. A day prior to the election, former candidate Henry Jakobsze claimed that Pavesich and the Downers Grove Community Activist had continued to endorse him with campaign literature, even after he had dropped from the race, in order to unseat Boyle, who was also up for election.

He filed a formal complaint with the election committee with the assistance of Bill White, who was school board president at the time.

The DGA declined any wrongdoing and said it had already printed the campaign materials before Jakobsze had dropped from the race.
