HINSDALE – Jacob White had a plan.
Having hit into a fielder’s choice against Max Larsen earlier in the game Tuesday, White laced a double to the right-field gap that scored Jared Eck to give Hinsdale Central’s baseball team a 3-2 win over visiting Lyons Township.
White didn’t waste much time in his second at-bat against Larsen, taking the first pitch to the opposite field for the game-winning hit.
“When I saw him before he was throwing me outside. I battled in that at-bat and I had an idea of what he threw,” White said. “The next time, I decided to go for it if it was a strike, otherwise I was going to have a patient at-bat. It was a juicy one down the middle and I went the other way with it.”
White’s heroics came one day after LT struck in the bottom of the seventh inning to deal Central a 5-4 loss. The Red Devils (12-10, 8-7 WSS) earned payback Tuesday and made a winner of Christian Bokich, who pitched all seven innings and finished with six strikeouts. The victory also snapped Central’s six-game losing streak.
“I kept telling the guys to keep their heads up,” Central coach Tom Dorrance said. “We faced a ton of Division I pitchers, but we kept having good at-bats. We were making outs, but we were hitting the ball hard and making improvements in our at-bats even though we were losing those games.”
Eck was running in place of Max Peters, who hit a one-out single to left and set the stage for White.
Central grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on two singles and three walks, one an intentional walk to Chris Botsoe to load the bases with one out. Matt Muellner walked to bring in Matt Silk (single), and Alec Hutcherson’s single plated Peters (walk). Two walks, a single and an error helped LT level the score in the top of the fourth.
