John Valle: York Township wants your Memorial Day stories
Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May, honors the men and women who died while serving in the American military. In 2013, Memorial Day is observed on Monday, May 27.
Every Memorial Day, families and communities across the nation take time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. Americans observe this special holiday in many different ways; such as displaying flags, visiting veterans' gravesites, marching in parades or reading President Lincoln's Gettysburg address and other historic and patriotic speeches by presidents and military leaders. And of course, the traditional selling of poppies by veterans' organizations to raise funds for veterans' causes.
In York Township, we fly our flag at half-staff until noon and in accordance with a Congressional resolution passed in 2000, we pause at 3 p.m. local time for a moment of silence to remember and honor the fallen. Another way we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice is to honor our living military veterans every day of the year.
