DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove police closed several blocks of 59th Street Monday afternoon and called in the bomb squad after a man found an old artillery round in his father's garage.

Downers Grove Police Lt. Mike Willison said a resident was cleaning out his father's garage Monday afternoon in the 900 block of 59th Street when he found what appeared to be a World War I-era artillery explosive. He called police, who deployed the bomb squad to determine exactly what the item is and dispose of it if necessary, Willison said.

The road re-opened as of 3:15 p.m.

The call came in at 1:48 p.m., he said.
