Prep roundup: Lyons Township boys gymnastics qualifies for state

BOYS GYMNASTICS

Lyons Township

The Lions earned a team spot at state for the first time since 2003 by grabbing the third of three at-large spots. LT was third at the Downers Grove North sectional with a score of 147.85. The Lions edged Glenbrook North for the eighth and final state spot by .05 after the Spartans totaled a 147.8 at the Stevenson sectional.

Chris Rediehs qualified in the all-around, floor, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and horizontal bar. Five juniors also qualified in individual events: Jackson McCoy (floor), Noah Mennemeier (pommel horse, parallel bars), Xavier Barry (pommel horse), Will Gallucci (rings, horizontal bar) and David Bielski (rings, horizontal bar).

BASEBALL

Morton

The Mustangs beat Hinsdale Central, 7-2, on Thursday thanks to a big day from Anthony Iniquez. Iniquez logged eight strikeouts in a complete-game effort on the mound. He was also 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Paolo Maietta was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Morton lost to Montini, 4-2, on Saturday.

Nazareth

The Roadrunners split a doubleheader with Notre Dame on Saturday. Nazareth lost Game 1 3-1, but earned the split with a 4-3 victory in Game 2. Pat Houlihan had two doubles and Mike Stromberg added two hits in the win. Mike Noesen scored the winning run by stealing home to end a five-game losing streak.

St. Joseph

The Chargers bounced back from a 4-1 loss to De La Salle on May 1 with wins over St. Francis de Sales (10-0) and Gordon Tech (7-4). Joe De Luna and Ryan Moritz each had three hits in the rout of St. Francis de Sales.

SOFTBALL

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs beat Bloom 17-9 on May 1. Katie O’Connell picked up her third win in a row following victories over Argo and Timothy Christian the previous two days. O’Connell also had four hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. RB lost to Glenbard South 9-3 on Thursday.

Lyons Township

The Lions lost to York 6-0 on Friday. Kayla Morrissey was 2-for-3 on the day. LT bounced back with a 6-5 win over Stagg on Saturday. Becky Ryckman was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Courtney Petrosius was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the win.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lyons Township

After losing a 1-0 game to Hinsdale Central on April 30, the Lions fell out of the race for the West Suburban Silver. Both teams entered the match with perfect conference records.

LT responded with wins over Proviso West (7-0) and Glenbard East (2-0). Emily Lange scored a pair of goals in the win over the Rams on Saturday, which was the fourth annual Pink Out game in Western Springs.

Riverside Brookfield

After a 3-2 win over Ridgewood on April 30, the Bulldogs lost to Leyden 2-1 on May 1.

Nazareth

Haley Renehan scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Marist on May 1. Gianna Milaro of Berwyn had two goals and two assists in a 4-1 win over Joliet Catholic on Saturday. The Roadrunners finished 5-3-1 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.

Morton

The Mustangs beat Mother McAuley 2-0 with a goal and an assist from Briana Keska.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Lyons Township

The Lions took a huge step toward a West Suburban Silver title by defeating Glenbard West 25-20, 23-25, 25-20 on April 30. Both teams entered the match with undefeated Silver records.

LT took third at the Lincoln-Way East Invitational over the weekend. The Lions beat Homewood-Flossmoor 25-15, 25-16 and Maine South 25-22, 25-27, 18-16 in pool play to advance to the quarterfinals. There, LT beat Lake Park 25-14, 25-11. In the semifinals the Lions fell to Lincoln-Way North 20-25, 25-22, 12-15. Lyons beat the hosts 25-17, 25-23 for third to hand East its third loss of the season.

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs beat Fenwick 25-17, 20-25, 25-12 on April 30. Tim Thor Larsen had 14 kills. On Thursday, RB beat St. Charles East 27-25, 25-19 despite allowing the Saints to have three game points in Game 1. Jack Gibson had a career high 12 kills.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Lyons Township

The Lions rested many of their top athletes at Hinsdale Central's McCarthy Memorial Invitational on Friday. Liam Callahan was LT's top finisher by taking third in the 800-meter run.

Morton

Omero Montalvo was second in the 3,200-meter run at the Carlin Nalley Invitational at Benedictine University on Saturday.

Riverside Brookfield

David Swon was third in the triple jump at the Carlin Nalley Invitational at Benedictine University on Saturday. Swon was also sixth in the long jump. Lewis Rogers placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles. Gerrand Moody was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

Riverside Brookfield

Jackie LaBelle won the pole vault at the Metro Suburban Conference meet on Friday in Elmwood Park. LaBelle cleared 8 feet, 6 inches. Marly Santora was second in the triple jump.

St. Joseph

Shaya Minter was the Chargers’ top finisher at the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference meet by taking fifth in the 100-meter dash.

Morton

Lili Mendez won the shot put and was runner up in the discus at the West Suburban Gold meet at Willowbrook on Friday. Rocio Hernandez was Morton’s other winner in the pole vault. Sierra Downey placed second in the 3,200-meter run. Desteny Casteneda was third in the 100-meter hurdles. The Mustangs also placed second in the 4 x 200 relay with the team of Casteneda, Karla Eslava, Ashley Grahm and Rosie Hernandez.

Fenwick

The Friars' 4x400 and 4x800 relays won the East Suburban Catholic Conference meet on Friday. Megan Cahill was second in the 400-meter run. Teammate Sarah Pezza was right behind in third. Other third place finishers were Olivia Ryan (800, 1,600), Becky Steinmeyer (3,200) and Hannah Sophie (long jump).

Nazareth

Kim Curtis was second in the shot put at the East Suburban Catholic Conference and teammate Devinne Love was third. Love was also third in the discus.

BOYS WATER POLO

Lyons Township

The Lions won the West Suburban Conference tournament Saturday at York. LT beat the host Dukes 15-5 in the semifinals and knocked off Hinsdale Central 21-9 in the final. LT's state title defense begins Thursday in a sectional quarterfinal against Little Village. The Lions are the No. 2 seed in the Fenwick sectional behind the host Friars, but the two powerhouse programs split two meetings in the regular season and LT won the most recent game. The two could meet in a sectional final on Saturday.

Fenwick

The Friars were the runners-up in the Metro Catholic Aquatics Conference tournament on Saturday. Fenwick beat De La Salle 16-7 and St. Ignatius 10-2 before losing to Loyola 7-5 in the final.

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with back-to-back wins over Metea Valley (9-8) and Argo (11-4) to head into Tuesday’s playoff opener against Westinghouse with momentum.

Morton

The Mustangs fell to York, 22-9, in a quarterfinal of the West Suburban Conference tournament on Friday.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Lyons Township

Following a 5-0 regular season mark in the West Suburban Conference the Lions won the WSC tournament as hosts on Saturday. They beat York 11-6 in the semifinal in the morning and edged past Oak Park-River Forest 9-7 in the final. LT, the No. 2 seed in the Fenwick sectional, will take on Riverside Brookfield in a quarterfinal on Wednesday.

Fenwick

The defending state champs placed third at the Metro Catholic Aquatics Conference tournament on Saturday. St. Ignatius beat Fenwick 9-8 in the semifinals. The Friars took out their frustration on Loyola in the form of a 24-9 win for third place.

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs lost, 8-4, to Metea Valley on May 1 in the regular-season finale. RB brings a 13-17 record into today’s sectional quarterfinal against Lyons Township.

Morton

The Mustangs lost to York 14-11 at the West Suburban Conference tournament on Saturday.

BOYS LACROSSE

Lyons Township

Three hat tricks boosted the Lions in an 11-3 win over Glenbard West on Thursday. Luke Gallagher, Emmett McNulty and Kevin Kilrea each had three goals and Danny Berg scored two. Gallagher scored three more goals and had an assist at Stevenson on Saturday, but the Lions lost 6-4 to the Patriots in Lincolnshire.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Lyons Township

After losing to rival Hinsdale Central 16-7 on May 1, the Lions beat Marian Catholic 15-6 on Saturday.

BOYS TENNIS

Nazareth

After beating St. Viator 4-1 in an East Suburban Catholic Conference dual match on Thursday the Roadrunners placed fifth out of 16 teams at the Lockport Invite on Saturday.

BADMINTON

Lyons Township

The Lions qualified three entries into the state tournament and won the Reavis sectional. Sophomore Stephanie Lin won the singles draw and beat teammate Elizabeth Abbs in the final. The doubles team of Jamie Duncan and Emma Thimmig also qualified for state by taking third.

Riverside Brookfield

Erica Fong and Izzi Cain highlighted RB’s fifth-place showing at the Downers Grove North sectional. The doubles team went 2-2 to come within two wins of qualifying for state.

Morton

The Mustangs took fifth at the Thornton Fractional South sectional and didn’t advance any qualifiers to state.

BOYS RUGBY

Morton

The Mustangs lost to Brother Rice, 25-20, on May 1. It was Morton’s first loss of the season.
