LA GRANGE – Two La Grange men were involved in a fatal car crash Saturday near Remington, Ind.
Michael D. Rendy, 20, and Jacob M. Newman, 20, both of La Grange, were on their way home from college when the crash occurred at 1:53 p.m. north of the Remington exit on Interstate 65, according to a news release from the Indiana State Police.
The students were heading northbound in the right lane when their vehicle's right tire blew, causing driver Mario L. Guagliardo, 20, of Deerfield, to lose control. The car veered to the right, then to the left, then rolled three times before coming to rest in the left lane.
Rendy, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of crash, was ejected from the car and sustained injuries that were life threatening, police said. He was airlifted to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn.
Newman, who was wearing a seat belt, was uninjured.
Guagliardo sustained injuries to his hands, elbow and face and was taken to Jasper County Hospital.
Passenger John J. Malone Junior, 20, of River Forest, was ejected from the car, which then came to rest on top of him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Passenger Jason L. Blackman, 20, of Wilmette, was taken to Jasper County Hospital for ankle and rib injuries.
Following the fatal rollover, a second deadly accident occurred at 2:50 p.m. due to traffic congestion caused by the earlier incident.
Police say alcohol and drugs were not a factor in either crash.
